Ojo Melvin Agunbiade, a professor, teaches courses on sociological theory, social research methods, and the sociology of health. My research interests include sexual health, aging, youth, gender and society, traditional medicine, and development. I hold a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science degree in Sociology and Anthropology, both awarded by Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Nigeria. With the award of a Doctoral Fellowship by CARTA, I proceeded to the University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa. The invaluable support from the university and CARTA gave me an edge to successfully complete my PhD thesis within three years. In 2016, I received a Commonwealth Scholarship to pursue a Master’s Degree (Distance Learning) in Gerontology at the University of Southampton in the United Kingdom. This program aligns with my professional development plan, which includes building a research career in aging. I have mentored a growing number of undergraduates in Sociology, and two of them are currently enrolled in Doctoral Programs in Sociology with full scholarships. I have published in reputable peer-reviewed journals and academic books. Methodologically, I lean towards mixed methods rather than any singular orientation, believing that mixed methods are useful and closer to achieving valid knowledge production from diverse but relevant positions. As such, I have found the interpretative sociological perspective appealing to my research activities. Within this broad sociological perspective, social practice theories, social constructionism, and post-modernism have provided a fruitful framework for my ongoing research engagements.
I’m available to supervise graduate students in Medical/Health Sociology and Social Gerontology
